Dear readers of the FSCA website,

I am writing these few lines from Bangkok, where I was appointed as the Senior Field Programme Officer just a few months back, and I take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I remember last year, more or less at the same time, I was planning my activities for the upcoming 2011 and I was sure that in 2011 many important things would have happened: the midterm review of all or most of the projects, the extension of the project in Guinea Bissau, the increase of funds -at least for Liberia-, the finalization of the Beneficiaries’ Assessment of the programme and a few other, equally important activities.

Food Security through Commercialization of Agriculture

FSCA projects are implemented by seven country countries of Western Africa and are funded by the Government of Italy through the Global Trust Fund for Food Security and Food Safety managed by FAO. Activities have already been launched in all the countries involved in the Programme: Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea and The Gambia.

The objective of these five-year agricultural development projects is to support African agriculture by developing a modern, competitive and commercially dynamic sector, building on the achievements and the lessons learned from the National Programmes for Food Security.

The regional coordination among the individual country projects is ensured by the “Inter-Country Coordination Unit for West Africa Food Security Projects”, assuring FSCA national projects’ coherence within a common strategic framework and promoting knowledge sharing on lessons learned and success stories, across projects and stakeholders.
